The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light (Matt 6:22). This is top shelf teaching. Its profoundness goes far beyond appearances, emotions and external stuff in which we often get caught up. The eye pertains to inner consciousness, because everything is inner consciousness. Let me exemplify: Paul says that a Christian can build with hay and stubble, but how can that be if he is taken over completely by God? They are One! That person isn’t less one with God than those who build with gold, silver and precious stones. It is that person’s inner eye, inner consciousness, which determines the quality of the work. Seeing separation, i.e., self-effort and self-improvement, means building with things that are consumed when tested with fire. The converse is equally true!!
If the only thing we see is Oneness, our eye is single, we are full of light and see things the way God sees them. James is a “top man” as Norman Grubb put it. He writes from a settled union perspective and thus when He writes in 1:13 that God cannot be tempted with evil the Spirit’s intention is to make it abundantly clear that God cannot see “double”. His single and only outlook is Oneness! Hence Jesus continues in Matt 6:23: “But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!” Genuine liberty and freedom of being is encapsulated in Matt 6:22 and it is towards this place the Spirit patiently is pulling each and every one of us in our inner consciousness. It is God’s own faith that wells up in us telling us that we are One, and from His perspective we already are placed in 6:22, so let us agree with God and receive what He has already given us.
