The law and the prophets are merely the stepping stones into a reality where the letter is a feeble shadow of the true liberated life which is found in the mystery – Christ in us. When we have left behind us questions about precepts, sin and interpretations of the word the Spirit by a sweeping motion draws us further into Himself as He is found within us so that we in increasing measure can behold the liberty which is found in the eternal being of God. By a divine instigation, that is, a gesture of grace our heavenly Father fuses the eternal Word together with us and hence transforms us into living temples where the Majesty dwells in all His might and magnificence. Caught up in an ever outgoing of light we are whole and lacking in nothing. Everything that is His is ours so that we become His trusted agents in managing the universe as co-heirs with Jesus Christ.
After He has filled us up with Himself He continues to reach out to the world with the word of reconciliation, that is, that the Adamic race was brought naught at the cross and the evil influence which had captured the image of God at the fall has nothing in the regenerated man in Christ so that the new man in every way can be restored to the likeness of God. Everything was brought to completion on the cross so by the Spirit’s essential work in us we simply come to recognize what is already accomplished in us. Hence we are transferred from glory to glory in our inward man as more and more of God’s perfection is revealed in us. This enlightening of the mind exposes our participation in the Triune fellowship and as the heavenly realities become more real to us the world and its temptations loses its enchantment and we bid it goodbye for the far greater glory found in the foolishness of the gospel.
All the above seems almost too good to be true. The fact is that the gospel is almost too stunning to believe. The good news has so far reaching consequences that we more than once are rendered in utter headshaking awe. It is quite clear, hence, that the issue isn’t about us drawing closer to God. He perfectly accomplishes that drawing when He reveals more and more of Himself to us, and when we understand with what magnificent love He loves us we are drawn to Him like magnets. We might sometimes wonder if we are somewhat slow witted who haven’t seen all this glory before. However, if God had exposed all His light to eyes which are accustomed to darkness we would have been transformed into babbling idiots. The fuses in our consciousnesses would have blown, burned to pieces in that piercing light. In His mercifulness He lets it seep a suitable amount of light into our minds so that we retain our sanity. I believe that the more light we accept and embrace the more light He can give us. Jesus said: “For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance.” (Matt 13:12)
Listen to this! It is Paul’s words: “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” (Eph 3:17-20)
We notice that the love of Christ supersedes knowledge. Reason cannot fathom God’s love. We cannot analyze it, scrutinize it or make theology out of it. His love defies our intelligence, learning and worldviews. Everything crumbles when exposed to His love. The next thing we notice is that God’s desire is to see us filled with all the fullness of Him. To be filled with all the fullness of God plainly requires that we abandon every attempt at understanding His love by reason. We receive it by divine revelation and faith. That’s all we can do. God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think. When we ask it is because a desire has surfaced and we put it into words and it launches us into action. However, even our desires cannot match His abilities. Our thinking faculty also involves our imagination and our visions. Even the most stunning fantasies we can muster pale when contrasted to exceeding abundantly above. Exceeding abundantly is so abstract that it is just as impossible to imagine as infinite numbers. It is limitless. It is infinite. It is endless. It is countless.
No wonder, really, that those who in earnest have begun their ascent into the unknown and limitless are denounced as heathens – that they are accused of heresy and other even worse things. Exceeding abundantly above is indeed frightening for the natural and the carnal mind. However, we have the mind of Christ and through faith we completely trust the Spirit’s guidance and revelations in us – that He in whatever circumstance is our keeper – and hence frightened by nothing we are lifted on eagle wings to a reality so bright in its radiance that only those who count everything formerly known as dung are able to step into it.
