The Spirit is a Rebel

When the Spirit has led you through the wilderness and conditioned you through that experience so that you are receptive for the revelations which follow and which will cause an end to your self efforts and establish you in the union with God, He will keenly guard your new standing in Christ. Every time someone attempts to subject you to laws, that is, outer ordinances such as should, ought to, should not etc you will sense something rise within you. The sensation can most closely be likened to defiance. In the beginning we are perhaps too well behaved to let the Rebel have His way. However, as He trains us we begin to recognize this rebellious sensation as Him. As an effect we adamantly refuse to let anyone rob from us our freedom in Christ regardless of who that tries to impose their moralistic outlook upon us. The Spirit is the Spirit of truth and freedom, and He lives within every believer making sure that we become rebels as well, insurrectionists that shake the religious world.

I can agree with the impositions placed upon us by a religious system that can raise the “rebel” in us. I do sometimes wonder though, if our “freedom in Christ” is really all about us. Of late I have found myself wearied by those promoting the “good news of grace” whose behaviors show less than allegiance not only to a religious system (no problem there) but also to the leadership of the Spirit of God (a real problem there). Interesting that while Paul touted his/our freedom in Christ he also identified himself as a “bond slave of Jesus Christ”. My liberty in Christ has now freed me to be Someone else’s bond slave rather than enslaved to the false self or to a religious system. It seems to me that Paul, like Peter, was willing to stretch out his hands and let Another bind him and lead him a way he would have preferred not to go: the way of the cross that leads to the experience of Jesus, who is our resurrection life.

Ole…this is such a wonderful truth. Not long ago the Spirit of the Lord whispered to me…”You are a Rebel”. At first I thought…oh no?! Then later on I heard a sermon that Christ was the first religious rebel. At that point I felt the Spirit smiling…. Thanks for your sharing.
